Simulation of a roofless channel with a side flow outlet in ANSYS Fluent

Nowadays, using the channels especially air and water transfer channels has been considered in industry.Shape and size of the channels depend on their uses. Construction and design of these channels are based on their usages.In this analysis, a roofless channel with an obstacle and side-flow inlet has been investigated.

Geometry and mesh generation

Geometry in this analysis has been made and designed by gambit software. Due to the phase changing in this flow, high-quality grid has been used till the behavior of the flow will be investigated properly.

The number of produced cells is 178093.

Boundary conditions

The boundary condition for the water in solution domain inlet has been considered as mass flow rate and the amount of it is equal to 45 kg/s. For the outlet of the channel, the pressure outlet condition has been used.

Two-phase model

This channel is roofless, therefore the surfaces of two fluids (water and air) are always in contact with each other. This contact leads to phase changing and also leads to evaporation. In order to analyze this behavior of fluids and volume fraction equations, the VOF two-phase model with implicit approach has been used.

Turbulence model and governing equations

By considering this type of flows, the amount of turbulence is high and also existence an obstacle in the channel leads to mixing the two fluids (water and air). The k-epsilon turbulence model has been used. For solving pressure and velocity equations which are solved as a couple in the pressure-based solver, the simple algorithm has been used for solution of momentum equations. Discretization method of second order upwind has been used. In the other items, the first order upwind method has been used.

The results have been presented as contours of pressure, velocity, and phases of liquid and vapor.
